Slovakia
Slovakia applies the common EASA rules, but bases flight practice on the requirements of the Dopravný úrad (Transport Authority), national Geo-Zones and a formal approach to exams and specific-category operations. In practice, before every flight you must check not only the open-category conditions but also the current geographical zones, AUP/UUP, the AIP SR and local conditions.
Flight rules
Quick overview for this country
This is a short overview of the most important requirements. Always confirm details and exceptions in official sources.
Local points to double-check
- Do not fly higher than 120 m above the nearest point of the earth's surface, keep VLOS, and do not carry dangerous goods or drop anything.
- During night flights in the open category, a green flashing light must be activated on the drone.
- Many operations in the open category require an A1/A3 certificate; the A2 subcategory requires completing A1/A3, practical self-training, and an additional theory exam taken in person in Bratislava.
- In Slovakia, UAS geographical zones are published by the Dopravný úrad as official Geo-Zones and must be checked before every flight; the current set of geo-zones is published as being in force from 14 July 2025.
- In airport controlled airspace (CTR), without approval you may fly in the open category only farther than 5.6 km from the airport reference point and only up to 30 m in height. Within an ATZ, a flight is possible only with the airport operator's consent.
- In class G airspace, a flight is possible only up to 120 m above the highest obstacle located within 30 m of the drone.
- Before a flight in restricted airspace, you must check whether the zone is active in the AUP and UUP reports of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic, and for full operational information use the AIP SR, NOTAMs and the electronic VFR manual.
- In areas where the third or a higher degree of nature protection applies, the consent of the nature protection authority is required.
- All UAS operators subject to registration under Article 14 of Regulation 2019/947 must hold valid third-party liability insurance during all UAS operations.
- If the flight does not meet the conditions of the open category, the operation moves to the specific category and requires an operational authorisation, and for selected risk profiles also ConOps documentation and a SORA or PDRA analysis.
