Camera / registration noteThe drone operator must have insurance compliant with Regulation (EC) No 785/2004 and demonstrate appropriate pilot skills for the planned operation. For commercial flights, an additional CAA authorisation is required, issued after submitting the relevant form; a simple flight notification is not enough.

Local points to double-check

A drone flight must first be notified to the CAA using the form Online Notification of the flight of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System.
The pilot must have skills appropriate to the planned operation, and the operator is obliged to provide insurance compliant with Regulation (EC) No 785/2004.
For commercial use of RPAS, a separate CAA authorisation based on the Application for commercial operation of RPAS is required; a flight notification alone does not entitle you to commercial work.
Because San Marino does not publish a widely available public geo-zone guide like EASA countries, the starting point should be cautious and procedural: before flying, consult the conditions directly with the authority.
Current online sources indicate a transition from the former SMCAA / caa.sm service to the new CAA-MNA site, but the regulatory model itself remains formal: notification for ordinary flights and an additional authorisation for commercial operations.
